LAKE PLACID, N.Y.-2006 Olympic silver medalists Shauna Rohbock (Orem, Utah) and Valerie Fleming (Foster City, Calif.) claimed fifth in today's women bobsled World Cup competition at the Olympic Sports Complex in Lake Placid, N.Y. U.S. teammates Erin Pac (Farmington, Conn.) and Emily Azevedo (Chico, Calif.) slid into an impressive sixth place result.

Rohbock and Fleming, who finished second in World Cup points last season, slid their third top-six result in as many races this season today. The American duo battled not only a competitive field, but also an injury that kept the pair from the podium.

"My abductor feels sore, so it's not the best," Rohbock said. "Our push was OK, but I wasn't able to push at my best, and we got smashed by quite a few teams off the starting block."

Rohbock sat in the sled and did not push throughout the week during training due to her injury. Despite her injury, the team was still able to push the sixth fastest start time of the first heat, a 5.68, and slid into fifth position with a time of 57.20 seconds.

"My first run felt alright, but I had a big skid at the bottom and went in late to corner 17, which cost us a lot of time," Rohbock said.

Rohbock and Fleming pushed a 5.72 in the second heat, stopping the clock in 1:54.96 after a second run of 57.76 seconds.

"I hope that I'll be able to pull it together physically during the break," Rohbock said. "I plan on coming back in the second half of the circuit and finishing on the podium again."

Pac and Azevedo teamed together for the first time this season and finished with an impressive sixth place result. Pac had a fifth place result last week in Park City, Utah, making today her second top-six result in a World Cup race.

Azevedo sprained her ankle early this fall during training, and came back to competition in today's event. The team pushed a 5.71, eighth best of the first heat, but recovered with the fourth fastest push of the second run with a push time of 5.68 seconds.

"I was really nervous today, because I wasn't sure what I would be able to do," Azevedo said. "I was a bit anxious in the first run and had a little slip, but I got the nerves out. After that I knew I was ready to go, and felt good in the second run."

Pac drove the team into sixth place after runs of 57.55 and 57.69, sixth and fifth fastest of the competition, respectively, for a total time of 1:55.24.

"I got stuck in the chicane on my first run and started to climb up the wall, which killed my speed," Pac said. " I was happy when I saw my time and knew that I was in sixth."

2006 Olympic Champions Sandra Kiriasis and Romy Logsch from Germany dominated the competition today with the two fastest runs. Kiriasis also smashed her previous track record by 0.27 seconds in the first heat, which she had set in Feb. 2005, with a 56.94 second first run. The German team slid a second run of 57.16 for a combined time of 1:54.10 to claim the gold.

Canadians Helen Upperton and Jennifer Ciochetto finished second with a combined time of 1:54.20 after runs of 57.01 and 57.19, with teammates Kaillie Humphries and Shelly-Ann Brown in third with a total time of 1:54.53 after runs of 57.10 and 57.43.

Kiriasis currently leads in World Cup rank with 650 points, with Upperton in second with 627 and Cathleen Martini from Germany in third with 612. Rohbock closes the first half of the 2007-08 season tied for fifth position with Humphries after claiming 568 points, with U.S. teammate Pac in sixth with 520 points.
